Prioritizing self-care with a 9-5
Posted by Melissa Ite on 24th May 2024
It can be a challenge sometimes to prioritize ourselves and lead a balanced life.
Each day may seem like a never ending cycle of targets, meetings and to-do lists. But, if you don't make the decision to prioritize yourself, who will? It is so important for you to be able to show up as your best self - this way, you are better equipped to handle your daily tasks and be actively present for yourself and those who depend on you.
Self-care is an intentional process of showing yourself the love you deserve. It is self-preservation. Your daily rituals should help you focus your attention where it's needed the most, and allow you to appreciate each unique moment.
Develop a morning routine
Your morning routine should be structured so that it accurately sets the tone for the rest of the day. Get up bright and early and allow yourself at least an hour and a half, so you have sufficient time for rituals like journaling, prayer/meditation, affirmation/intention setting and stretching.
It is important to have a good, healthy breakfast. Make a note of your non-negotiable commitment for the day. Whether you are committing to relaxing at the end of the day with a foot soak, take a stroll outside or exercise - all it takes to start, is one mindful practice.
Stay hydrated
Keep your water bottle close by and refill it throughout the day. Being well-hydrated improves your mood and causes you to think clearly. This is definitely important as you work to methodically decrease your to-do list and contribute to or host meetings.
Don't skip lunch
This is a definite no no. And, working lunches do not count! You deserve a break and that's exactly what lunchtime is for. Skipping lunch can have numerous negative effects on your body and mind. They both need fuel to operate at their best, so you don't end up feeling sluggish or having a hard time focusing.
Take a Pause Moment
Get up from your desk or workstation and take a 10 minute pause moment, ever so often. Use the time to go outside in the sunlight if possible, stretch, drink some water or enjoy a cup of tea and clear your mind. You can schedule your pause moments in varying slots in your calendar and set alarms to remind you.
Do your non-negotiable commitment
This is where you are required to keep that promise you made to yourself, in the form of your non-negotiable commitment. This should be an activity that is good for you and one that you will enjoy doing. That way, you will be looking forward to doing it, instead of dreading it. Switch it up each day, so that you don't get bored. Set your non-negotiable as an alarm in your phone or calendar.
Unwind with your evening routine
Ahhh, you've made it to the end of the day and may be tempted to just have dinner, take a shower and scroll through social media before hitting the sheets. Before you go any further, keep in mind that your evening routine is just as important as your morning routine. Use this time to reflect on your day, journal your thoughts, celebrate wins - no matter how small and start preparing for the new day.
Try to avoid any blue light for approximately 30 minutes before you head to bed - that way you can look forward to a restful night. A weighted eye mask can help to fill that 30 minute gap and will soothe your tired eyes and release facial tension as it helps you sink into deep, restful sleep.
Take a wellness day
Some companies may offer you a set number of paid wellness days/departmental leave each year. Use them! There are going to be some days when you feel extremely tired or overwhelmed - trust me, this isn't the time to force yourself, or be a hero. Take the time to relax and get meaningful rest, so you can feel refreshed as you head back to the office. You may be surprised what an extra day of intentional self-care can do.
Without self-care, you run the risk of developing serious health conditions and complications. Prioritize your well-being and become intentional about designing a self-care routine that fits your lifestyle.
