Why Intentions Are Better Than Resolutions: A Mindful Approach to Achieving Your Goals

Why Intentions Are Better Than Resolutions: A Mindful Approach to Achieving Your Goals

Posted by Melissa Ite on 31st Dec 2024

As I reflect on the past year, I'm reminded of the shift I made in my approach to goal-setting. Instead of making traditional New Year's resolutions, I decided to try something new: setting intentions.

For the past year, I've been focusing on cultivating specific mindsets, attitudes, and behaviors, rather than trying to achieve specific end results. Annnnd, let me tell you, it has been one of the best decisions I've made to date.

The truth is, traditional New Year's resolutions weren't working for me at all! And I found out that I wasn't alone. Research shows that a staggering 80% of New Year's resolutions fail by February. Wow! In fact, a study by the University of Scranton found that only 19% of people maintain their resolutions for at least two years.

It got me wondering why resolutions fail.

Most times, it's because they're based on an all-or-nothing approach, relying on willpower and motivation to drive us forward. But when we inevitably encounter setbacks, we feel guilty, ashamed, and overly self-critical. This can lead to a cycle of self-doubt and frustration, causing us to give up on our goals altogether. And that was exactly what used to happen to me - in a nutshell.

By setting intentions, I've been able to approach my goals with kindness, curiosity and openness. I've learned to be gentle with myself when I stumble, and to celebrate my progress along the way.

One of the biggest benefits of setting intentions has been the reduction in stress and anxiety that often comes with traditional goal-setting. By focusing on the process, rather than the end result, I've been able to enjoy the journey and find meaning in the everyday moments.

As I look ahead to the new year, I'm excited to continue setting intentions and exploring this more mindful approach to goal-setting. If you're feeling called to try something new, I invite you to join me.

Here are a few tips that have helped me set intentions over the past year:

Reflect on your values and goals

Take some time to think about what's truly important to you, and what you want to cultivate or achieve in you life.

Identify your intentions

Based on your reflections, identify what you want to focus on in the coming year. Try to focus on the process, rather than the end result.

Display your intentions

Write your intentions and put them in a prominent place, such as on your bathroom mirror, refrigerator, or in your daily journal. This visual reminder will help you stay focused and committed throughout the day.

Approach with kindness

As you work towards your intentions, try to approach yourself with kindness. Remember, that setbacks and imperfections are a natural part of the process. Don't be too hard on yourself.

I hope you'll join me on this journey of setting intentions and exploring a more mindful approach to goal-setting. Let's make the coming year one of growth, compassion and celebration.
